Inclement Weather Procedures

The university-wide commencement ceremony will take place in front of the Tower, unless dangerous weather requires rescheduling of the program to protect the safety of graduates and their guests.

If severe and threatening weather arises after the seating area opens at 5 p.m., graduates and their guests may be instructed to seek shelter in nearby buildings. Event staff will direct graduates and their guests to the nearest building. If this occurs while graduates, banner carriers and faculty marshals are gathered in the marshaling assembly areas, staff will guide procession participants from each college/school to designated buildings for shelter.

In both circumstances, the start of the program may be delayed. If possible and as conditions allow, the program would resume. As it is known, information will be relayed to graduates and their guests.

In addition and as necessary, text messages will be sent to faculty, staff and students enrolled in the cell phone alert system

Guests can sign up for text message alerts regarding parking, traffic, and information about Commencement events that may be delayed or cancelled due to weather or an unexpected circumstance. This service will be available for sign-up in April 2020.

Please note: Umbrellas are not permitted for security reasons, so attendees should bring appropriate raingear if desired.
